Surgical rehabilitation is a structured, progressive program of physical therapy that begins after a surgical procedure — often sooner than most patients expect. Whether you’ve undergone a joint replacement, rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction, spinal surgery, or another orthopedic procedure, surgery is only the first step in recovery. The body must then relearn how to move, rebuild the strength it lost, and restore the function it had before injury.
Our therapists work closely with your surgeon’s post-operative protocol to guide you through every phase of healing — from managing early swelling and pain, to regaining a full range of motion, to returning to the activities you love.
Surgical rehab is appropriate for anyone recovering from a procedure that affects movement, strength, or physical function. Common examples include:
- Joint replacements — hip, knee, or shoulder
- Ligament and tendon repairs — ACL, rotator cuff, Achilles
- Spinal procedures — discectomy, spinal fusion, laminectomy
- Fracture repair — internal fixation or stabilization surgeries
- Soft tissue surgeries — labral repairs, meniscus procedures, and more
If your surgeon has recommended or prescribed post-operative physical therapy, you’re a candidate. And if you’re unsure, we’re always happy to consult with your care team directly.
Why surgical rehabilitation matters
Surgery repairs the structure — rehabilitation restores the function. Without guided rehabilitation, even a technically successful surgery can result in prolonged weakness, stiffness, compensatory movement patterns, and a significantly longer road to recovery.
A personalized rehab program helps you:
- Reduce pain and inflammation in the days and weeks following surgery
- Restore range of motion safely and progressively, without stressing healing tissue
- Rebuild muscle strength that naturally declines during immobilization
- Retrain movement patterns so the body moves efficiently and safely again
- Lower the risk of re-injury by addressing underlying weaknesses and imbalances
- Return to daily life faster — work, hobbies, sport, and everything in between
The timing, pacing, and techniques used in your program matter enormously. That’s why our therapists don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach. Your rehab plan is built around your specific surgery, your body, your goals, and the pace your healing.
If you’ve recently had surgery, or if you’re preparing for an upcoming procedure and want to start strong, we’d love to talk. Getting the right support at the right time makes all the difference.
